Which metrics are on the vService dashboard?
Short answer
The vService Dashboard groups the panels in 10 view tabs (view tabs): Summary, HTTP Frontend, Source IP Based, Distribution, Backend, Network, System, SSL, Traffic Mirroring and Action Hits. Summary, Source IP Based, Backend, Network and System exist in every vService; HTTP Frontend appears only in HTTP, Distribution in HTTP and L7 TCP, SSL if there is a listener that terminates TLS, Traffic Mirroring if mirroring is defined, and Action Hits if there is an action with Hit Counter on. The metrics are request and connection rates, response code distribution, source IP density, country and network type breakdowns, Backend Service distribution and health, bandwidth, TLS counters, and the vService's CPU, memory and uptime. Each panel is read in the selected time range with the Last value, Avg. value, Max. value and Total summaries, depending on the metric type; Total exists only in rate metrics (panel metric columns).
How Does It Work?
The Dashboard is the first tab that opens when the vService is clicked in the Left Monitor Panel's Load Balancer vServices category (accessing the Dashboard). The panels show the metrics recorded by TR7 in the selected time range; the screen is managed with the following controls:
- Time range: The default is the last 1 day; preset ranges from 5 minutes to 5 years and a custom date range are selected (screen controls).
- Auto-Refresh: Disabled, 5s, 10s, 30s or 60s; the default is 10s.
- Settings: Chart Resolution, panel height (Height) and theme (Theme); in a cluster, which device's data is shown is selected with Source (default Both Devices).
- Panel summaries: Last value, Avg. value, Max. value and Total; there is no Total in instantaneous (gauge) panels (panel metric columns).
- View: The panels are shown in different formats such as map, line, bar, pie, heatmap and table; the tabs are customized with templates (Can I customize the vService dashboard with templates?).
Dashboard Tabs in TR7
The view tabs are located above the panels, and Summary opens by default; a tab is shown only if its condition is met (view tabs).
| Tab | When it appears | Main panels |
|---|---|---|
| Summary | Always | Requests or connections by country, vService Uptime, Frontend Request Count, Frontend New Connections, Frontend Bandwidth, Frontend Response Distribution, Active Source IPs, Backend Health, Frontend Concurrent Sessions |
| HTTP Frontend | HTTP vService | Frontend Request Count, Frontend Response Distribution; compression and cache panels if there is a profile |
| Source IP Based | Always (in a Network vService, the tab appears but the panels are not created; only the Add Visualization card remains) | Active Source IPs; connections, requests, errors and traffic per source IP (peak and p95) |
| Distribution | HTTP and L7 TCP | Country map and tables, distribution by network type groups and categories, heatmap |
| Backend | Always | Backend Service requests, response time, sessions, queue, connect time, response code distribution, health status and health check timings |
| Network | Always | New connections, concurrent sessions, bandwidth, throughput, Backend Service bandwidth distribution |
| System | Always | vService CPU Usage, vService Memory Usage, vService Memory Usage %, vService Uptime |
| SSL | If TLS is terminated on a listener | SSL Concurrent Connections, SSL New Connections (TPS), SSL Session Reuse |
| Traffic Mirroring | If Traffic Mirroring is defined on the vService | Mirror Flow, In-flight Copies, Dropped Copies |
| Action Hits | If there is an action with Hit Counter on | Count per action (Can I see how many times an action has been triggered (hit counter, Action Hits)?) |
Common Misconceptions
- "The Dashboard shows the current status." The Dashboard shows the recorded data spread over time; the per-second live counters are in the Live Stats tab.
- "All tabs appear in every vService." The tabs appear according to the vService type and the features that are on.
- "The source IP panels show the total traffic." The per-source-IP panels show the peak value and the p95 value of the busiest client in the measurement window (default 10 seconds); the total traffic is in the Network tab.
