What do RX and TX mean?
Short answer
RX (receive) is the traffic an interface receives, and TX (transmit) is the traffic it sends; the direction is always read from the interface's own point of view. On the interface facing the clients, the incoming requests appear as RX and the outgoing responses as TX; on the interface facing the servers, the requests going to the servers appear as TX and the incoming responses as RX. In TR7, the panels on the Dashboard screen of the interface separate the series by direction: RX Traffic and TX Traffic in Network Bandwidth, RX Packets and TX Packets in Network Packets, RX Errors, TX Errors, RX Drops and TX Drops in Network Interface Errors. The Interfaces tab of the Left Monitor Panel shows the RX Traffic and TX Traffic columns in the default metric; the Interface Traffic row in the preview panel and the Total Traffic column on the Route Tables screen, on the other hand, show the received traffic with ↓ and the sent traffic with ↑.
Where It Is Used in TR7
| Where | Field / label | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Left Monitor Panel → Interfaces → interface → Dashboard | Network Bandwidth (RX Traffic, TX Traffic), Network Packets (RX Packets, TX Packets), Network Interface Errors (RX Errors, TX Errors, RX Drops, TX Drops) | Traffic, packets and errors per interface by direction |
| Left Monitor Panel → Interfaces | Primary Metric columns (default RX Traffic, TX Traffic; Display Period default Last 1 day(s)) | Comparing the interfaces by RX and TX volume |
| Home → Network tab | Total Network Bandwidth, Total Network Packets, Total Network Errors | The RX and TX total of all interfaces |
| Network → Interfaces → interface preview → Details | Interface Traffic (↓ incoming, ↑ outgoing; per device) | Instant traffic |
| Network → Route Tables | Total Traffic (↓ received, ↑ sent); in a cluster, a separate column per device | Instant traffic per route table |
| WEB-CLI | sys-cmd netstat (netstat) | With the -i parameter, received / sent packet and error counters per interface |
Common Misconceptions
- "RX is always traffic coming from the internet." RX is the traffic the interface receives; on the interface facing the internal network, the responses coming from the servers are RX.
- "The RX of one interface must be equal to the TX of another interface." Traffic can be distributed over more than one interface; the traffic that TR7 itself produces (health check, management, cluster synchronization) also enters the counters.
- "In a cluster, the graph is the value of a single device." The graph views of the Dashboard sum the RX and TX values of the two devices; to separate the devices, the Stat Table view is used.
