What is the Header Bar; how do I set up my own layout?
Short answer
Header Bar is the widget-based strip on which the user sets up their own layout, located at the very top of the interface: it gathers items such as the user information, the language and theme selection, page shortcuts, the clock, notes and live system or traffic metrics in a single strip visible on every screen. All the items except the Header Options button at the very left are widgets; there are at most 10 widgets on the bar. To set up a layout, the edit mode is entered with Header Options → Edit Header Bar, widgets are added to the left or the right section, ordered by dragging and saved with Save Changes. Hide Header Bar reduces the bar to a thin strip, and Reset Header Bar returns it to the default layout. The layout is saved to the user account; the same layout also appears in a different browser and on the peer device in a cluster.
Where It Is Used in TR7
| Where | Field / label | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Far left of the bar | Header Options → Edit Header Bar, Hide Header Bar, Reset Header Bar | Editing the bar, reducing it to a thin strip, returning it to the default layout |
| Edit mode | Add button → Add Widget to Header window (how it is customized); Save Changes, Discard Changes | Adding widgets and saving or undoing the changes |
| Header Bar | Widgets: Language Selector, User Info, System Clock, Logout Button, Notes, Theme Toggle, Fullscreen Toggle, Menu Shortcut, Live Chart, vService - Shortcut + Live Chart | Personal top strip |
| Page tab of an open screen → right-click | Add to Header Bar, Remove from Header Bar | Adding the screen's shortcut to the bar or removing it |
| Settings → General Settings → My Preferences | Header Bar: Show / Hide / Remove | Showing the bar, reducing it to a thin strip or removing it completely together with its strip |
Default Layout
Header Bar comes with the following layout on first use and after Reset Header Bar (default Header Bar):
| Section | Widget |
|---|---|
| Left | User Info, Menu Shortcut (Home) |
| Right | Language Selector, Theme Toggle, Logout Button |
Language Selector, User Info, Logout Button, Notes, Theme Toggle and Fullscreen Toggle can be added to the bar only once; the clock, shortcut and chart widgets can be added more than once.
Common Misconceptions
- "The Header Bar layout is specific to this browser." The layout is saved to the user account; the same layout also appears in another browser and on the peer device in a cluster. The bars of other users are not affected.
- "Hide Header Bar removes the bar completely." The bar is reduced to a thin strip; when the strip is clicked, the bar comes back. To remove it together with its strip, Remove is selected in the Header Bar preference on the Settings → General Settings → My Preferences screen.
- "Changes in the edit mode are saved immediately." The changes are a draft until they are saved with Save Changes, whereas Discard Changes undoes them after getting confirmation if a change has been made.
