What is the Search Bar; what can I search for?
Short answer
Search Bar is the search window opened with the Search TR7... field at the bottom left corner of the screen or with the Alt + T (Option + T on macOS) shortcut. Instead of browsing the menus one by one, the name of a screen or a record is typed and, by selecting the result, the related screen is reached directly. The searchable items are the menu screens, the vService, Backend Service and Backend Group, action, condition, profile, certificate and TLS records, the AGS records and the network elements; the results are separated into the Navigation, vServices, Backends, Actions, Conditions, Profiles, Security, AGS and Network tabs. The search runs in the browser: the screens and records are loaded into a search index in the browser, and the searches are made in this index without a query being sent to the server.
Where It Is Used in TR7
| Where | Field / label | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom left corner | Search TR7... field, Alt + T (Option + T on macOS) | Opening the search window |
| Search window, while the box is empty | Recent, Most Visited | Returning to the recently and the most frequently opened screens |
| Search window, results | Result tabs: Navigation, vServices, Backends, Actions, Conditions, Profiles, Security, AGS, Network | Going directly to a screen or a record |
The tab-by-tab breakdown of what can be searched and the limit of at most 50 results are in the what can be searched section, and the matching rules (matching from the beginning of the word, at least 3 characters) are in the matching rules section. Step-by-step use of the window with the keyboard: How is a quick search done in the menu and across vServices (Alt+T)?
Common Misconceptions
- "The search sends a query to the server on every keystroke." The search is made in the index in the browser; the index is prepared when the window is first opened in the session and is kept up to date as the records change.
- "A record is found when any part of the word is typed." The expression matches the beginning of the words in the name and the description, and at least 3 characters are required; a shorter expression gives a result only when the name, ID or vService type of the record is typed in full. Typing errors are not tolerated.
- "Search Bar shows all the screens to everyone." Navigation results are limited to the screens in the tabs for which the user has permission.
