Which monitoring screens does GTM have; what does each one show?
Short answer
GTM is monitored with two kinds of screens: metric dashboards that show the query traffic, and status and event screens that show GTM's decisions. The metric dashboards are at four levels: the GTM tab on the Home screen shows the total of all DNS services, the Dashboard of a DNS Service shows a single service, and the domain name dashboard and the record dashboard show a single domain or record. The decisions are monitored from the status circles in the lists (DNS Service, record, health check, health scenario, remote device), from the GTM category of the Left Monitor Panel and from the GTM Logs screen, which keeps health check, scenario, record status, trigger and data center events in date order.
How Does It Work?
| Screen | Where | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Home → GTM | The Home shortcut in the Header Bar → GTM tab | The total of all DNS services on the device (All DNS Services); Traffic, Responses, Performance and Forwarder subtabs |
| Left Monitor Panel → GTM | Left Monitor Panel, GTM category | DNS services with a status strip and the selected metric (default Total Queries); clicking a row opens the service's Dashboard. The GTM Domains and GTM Records categories can also be added |
| DNS Service Dashboard | The first tab of the service screen | Summary, Traffic, Query Types, Country Distribution, Domains & Records, System and, if a forwarder is assigned, Forwarder tabs: query rate, response codes, record type, country, cache, latency |
| Domain name dashboard | Domains → preview → Dashboard | Queries coming to the domain, the existing / non-existing name ratio, breakdowns by record type and by record |
| Record dashboard | Records → preview → Dashboard | The rate of queries coming to the record |
| Status lists | Service Management, Records, Health Checks, Health Scenarios, Remote Devices | Whether the service is running, the answer of the record (OK, DR, Fail-safe…), the check and scenario decision, access to the data center |
| GTM Logs | Settings → System Logs → GTM Logs | Health Check Status, Health Scenario Status, Record State, Trigger Action, AXFR Action, data center access events and user operations |
The Log window in the preview panel of each object shows the same events only for that object; the Active Records row in the record preview lists the addresses that are in the answer at that moment.
Monitoring in TR7
- Drill-down: The total of all services is seen on the Home → GTM tab, a single service on the Dashboard, and a single domain and record on their own dashboards (View Levels). The lower-level dashboards are opened not by clicking the panels but from the previews on the Domains and Records screens or from the GTM Domains and GTM Records categories of the Left Monitor Panel.
- Order when investigating a problem: By following the Health Check Status → Health Scenario Status → Record State events in GTM Logs, it is seen with which check a Disaster Recovery transition started.
- Exporting: GTM Logs can be forwarded to a Syslog or SIEM server with Log Forwarding (Log Sources → GTM Logs).
- Cluster: The status circles in the lists are split in two and each half shows the status of one device; in GTM Logs, the device on which the event was generated is written in the Source column.
Common Misconceptions
- "The Dashboard lists individual DNS queries." The dashboards show aggregate metrics; for query logging: Can GTM log DNS queries; where are the logs shown?
- "GTM Logs shows DNS queries." GTM Logs keeps GTM's decisions and user operations; queries are not listed here.
- "The GTM tab on the Home screen gives per-service information." The panels on this tab are the total of all DNS services; the per-service view is on the Dashboard.
- "If a record appears OK, all of its addresses are in the answer." If an address from the group in the answer is unhealthy, the status becomes Partially OK (a record is down); the addresses in the answer are seen in the Active Records row.
