What is SMTP; with which settings does TR7 send e-mail notifications?
Short answer
SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is the standard protocol used for sending e-mail (RFC 5321). TR7 sends notification, report and backup e-mails without its own mail server, through the organization's SMTP server; this server is defined once in the E-mail Settings section in Notification Management and is used for all e-mail sending device-wide. The definition contains the server address (Host Device), the port, optional Authentication, connection security (Security: None, SSL, TLS or START TLS; default TLS), the sender name and address, CC/BCC and the subject; before the settings are saved, a test e-mail can be sent to an address with Test e-mail Settings (E-mail settings editing form). Without this setting, the e-mail channel of notifications, periodic report e-mails and the e-mail sending of File Forwarding do not work.
Where It Is Used in TR7
| Where | Field / label | What for |
|---|---|---|
| Settings → General Settings → Notification Management → E-mail settings → Edit | Route Table, Host Device, Port, Authentication, Security | Global SMTP server and connection settings |
| Same form | Sender Name, Sender Address, CC, BCC, Subject | Sender information, the recipients to be added to every e-mail, and the subject |
| Same form | Test e-mail Settings | Verifying the settings with a test e-mail |
| Notification Management → Notifications | Notification Action → Send e-mail | E-mail on device events |
| Load Balancer → Profiles → Notifications; WAF, Bot/DDoS and AGS notification screens | E-mail fields | Recipient addresses of module notifications; the sending goes through this SMTP |
| Load Balancer → Profiles → Reports; WAF Management → Periodic reporting | E-mail Report (in WAF) | Periodic report e-mails (Can I receive reports regularly by e-mail?) |
| AGS → Authentication → Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) | Email OTP | Sending the one-time verification code to the user by e-mail |
| Settings → General Settings → File Forwarding | Transport Type = E-Mail | Sending backup files by e-mail |
- Notification channels and recipients: What is Notification Management; how do the notification profile, Contact Groups and channels come together?
- Sending WAF reports by e-mail: Can I receive reports regularly by e-mail; at what times are they sent?
Common Misconceptions
- "TR7 delivers the e-mail to the recipient itself." TR7 is only an SMTP client; e-mails go through the SMTP server in the Host device field, and that server delivers them to the recipient.
- "Selecting e-mail in the notification profile is enough." If E-mail settings is not defined, the e-mail channel does not work; the SMTP setting is made first.
- "Each module has a separate SMTP setting." There is a single SMTP server device-wide; on the notification screens of the modules, only the recipient addresses are entered.
