What is the difference between Local and Express record management?
Short answer
The record management method determines where the addresses in a data center group of a domain come from and is selected per group in the domain form; in the same domain, some groups can be Local and others Express. In Local (the default), the addresses are added, edited and deleted manually on TR7 from the Records tab. In Express, the addresses are pulled from an existing DNS server (master) by zone transfer with an Express profile; the management of the records stays on the master server, and the address rows on TR7 are read-only. A group becomes Express when the EXPRESS box is marked and a profile is selected; if no profile is selected, it remains Local.
How Does It Work?
- Local: The records are added one by one, or transferred once from a server with Zone Transfer on the record tab; after that, they are managed on TR7.
- Express: When the master server sends a NOTIFY to TR7 after a change, or when Sync via Express is clicked on the record tab, TR7 pulls the zone from the master and rewrites the group's records according to the zone on the master (What is an Express Profile; how does it relate to zone transfer?).
With both methods, the domain's mode, Balance Algorithm and Fail-Safe Records are applied in the same way. The difference is at the address level: the addresses of an Express group arrive with the Static HC condition at every transfer, and a health scenario or topology rule cannot be selected per address; in these groups, health-based switchover is done with record-level conditions (e.g. Disaster Recovery Condition).
Comparison
| Local | Express | |
|---|---|---|
| Source of the addresses | Entered manually on TR7 | Zone transfer from the master DNS server |
| Where the record is managed | TR7 | The master server |
| Buttons on the record tab | Add, Delete, Zone Transfer | Sync via Express, Express Logs |
| Address rows in the record form | Editable (address, HC condition, topology rule) | Read-only; the HC condition is Static |
| Updating | Manual | When a NOTIFY comes from the master, or with Sync via Express |
| Required definition | None | An Express Profiles (DNS Integration) profile |
If the domain has both a Local and an Express group, the two sets of buttons appear together.
In TR7
- The selection is made in each data center group under the Default Mode field; a new Express profile can be added with the + icon next to the profile selector.
- The Record Management column in the domain list shows the method of the groups in the form
local: 1,express: 2, and the domain preview shows it for each group as Local Management or EXPRESS.
Common Misconceptions
- "Marking the EXPRESS box is enough." If the box is marked and no profile is selected, the group is saved as Local.
- "Express records can be corrected on TR7." The address rows are read-only; the change is made on the master server and comes to TR7 at the next transfer.
- "Express is TR7 distributing its records to other servers." Express pulls the records from outside; to transfer the domain on TR7 to secondary servers, Slave Server IPs is used.
