How do I see which vServices use a Backend Service ("Used in")?
Short answer
The fastest way is the Used in tab in the preview panel that opens on the right when a record is clicked in the Backend Services list: the vServices and rules that use the Backend Service are listed, and clicking a name goes to that record. To filter the list by usage, the Used in card in the Filter strip or the Usage Filter button is used; to look from the vService side, the Load Balancer Management screen; and to see it together with traffic, the Per vService tab of the Backend Service Dashboard.
Problem: Which vServices Does a Change Affect?
A Backend Service can be used in more than one vService, and the record is single: a change such as the address, SSL or Maintenance Mode, or a deletion, affects all the vServices that use it at the same time. The deletion is not blocked because of usage; the deleted record is removed from all vService lists. Therefore, before a change, it is seen where the Backend Service is used.
Solution: Four Methods
The methods show the same information from different places; for the usage of a single record, Method 1 is sufficient.
| Your situation | Suitable method |
|---|---|
| I want to see the usage of a single Backend Service | Method 1: Used in tab in the preview panel |
| I want to filter the list by one or more vServices | Method 2: List filters |
| I want to see it from the vService side, together with the statuses | Method 3: Load Balancer Management |
| I want to see the usage with traffic data | Method 4: Dashboard → Per vService |
Method 1: Used in Tab in the Preview Panel Recommended
- How it works Each record that directly uses the Backend Service is listed as a row: the vServices in whose list it is, and the Traffic Mirroring actions in which it is selected as the target.
- Where it is openedLoad Balancer → Backend Services (or Backend Groups) → the record is clicked → preview panel → Used in
- Requirement The Backend Service is used in at least one place (if it is not used, the tab does not appear)
- vService type All
Step-by-Step Configuration
The record is clicked in the Load Balancer → Backend Services list; the preview panel opens on the right. If the panel is closed, it is reopened with the ambulance-icon handle at the top right of the list area.
A switch is made to the Used in tab; the badge next to the tab name shows the usage count. The tab appears only if the record is used in at least one place. Clicking a name goes to that record.
Verification
The number of rows on the Used in tab is the same as the number on the badge.
The vServices that use it are listedMethod 2: List Filters
- How it works The Backend Services list is filtered to the records used by the selected vServices. More than one vService can be selected in the Used in card of the Filter strip; the Usage Filter button in the toolbar, on the other hand, turns the search box into a single-selection vService selector.
- Where it is openedLoad Balancer → Backend Services → Filter → Used in
- Requirement None
- vService type All
Step-by-Step Configuration
In the Filter strip on the list screen, the Used in card is clicked; below the card, the vServices and the Unused Entries value are listed with their row counts.
One or more vServices are selected; the list shows only the Backend Services they use. The same filtering is also done with the network-icon Usage Filter button in the toolbar: when the button is turned on, the search box turns into a vService selector and the first option is selected automatically; the filter is removed by clicking the button again.
Verification
Only the Backend Services used by the selected vServices remain in the list; the badge on the Filter button shows the number of active filters.
Rows matching the selectionMethod 3: Load Balancer Management
- How it works The Backend Services in all branches of the vService (Default and conditional) are listed with status dots.
- Where it is opened Left Monitor Panel → Load Balancer vServices → vService → Load Balancer Management → Backend Services
- Requirement None
- vService type All
Step-by-Step Configuration
In the Left Monitor Panel, the vService is clicked in the Load Balancer vServices category, and the Load Balancer Management tab is selected on the screen that opens (accessing the screen).
In the Backend Services section, all the Backend Services in the Default and conditional lists of the vService appear with their statuses.
Verification
The Backend Service being looked for is listed in the section.
Backend Service · status dotMethod 4: Dashboard → Per vService
- How it works On the Per vService tab of the Backend Service Dashboard, each vService that uses it is drawn as a separate series.
- Where it is opened Backend Service → Dashboard → Per vService
- Requirement The Backend Service is used in at least one vService
- vService type All
Step-by-Step Configuration
With the Dashboard operation in the preview panel of the Backend Service, the Dashboard screen is opened, and a switch is made to the Per vService tab.
The series names in the charts are the vServices that use the Backend Service; if the Backend Service is used in a Conditional Backend Services branch of a vService, the condition of the branch is written in parentheses next to the name.
Verification
If there is no usage, only the Add Visualization card remains on the tab.
Each vService as a separate seriesCommon Mistakes
- Expecting usage information in the delete confirmation. The delete confirmation does not show usage, and a record in use is also deleted; before deleting, the Used in tab is checked.
- Looking in the right-click menu. The right-click menu in the list contains only Edit and Delete.
- Assuming that the filters also show usage in rules. Filter and Usage Filter count only the vServices that use the Backend Service in their own list. A Backend Service used only as a target in a Traffic Mirroring action does not appear under that vService in the filters, even if the action is bound to a vService; this usage is seen with the action name on the Used in tab of the preview.
- Leaving Usage Filter on. The list is assumed to be incomplete; the filter is removed by clicking the button again.
- Looking in the vService form. While a vService is being edited, the Used in tab in the Backend Service selector also filters the records by usage; however, this is only for selection, and the full usage list of the record is on the Used in tab of the preview.
