What is a domain in GTM; how does it relate to a DNS Service?
Short answer
In GTM, a domain is the zone for which a DNS Service answers authoritatively (e.g. example.com). Each domain belongs to a single DNS Service and is defined on the Domains tab of that service's screen; a service can host more than one domain. A domain carries its own records and settings: the operating mode (Default Mode), the data center groups and the record management of these groups (Local or EXPRESS), Slave Server IPs, DNSSEC and SOA Format. The domain's mode is applied to all of its records; in this way, on the same service, one domain can work in Standalone mode and another in Datacenter mode.
How Does It Work?
- The service finds which domain the queried name belongs to and produces the answer from that domain's records.
- When the domain is saved, the Default Mode value is applied to all the records of the domain, and one address group is added to each record for each data center group in the domain.
- When a domain is created, an SOA record is added automatically; its serial number advances according to the SOA Format selection.
- The servers in the Slave Server IPs list are given zone transfer permission, and a NOTIFY is sent to them at every change in the domain.
Domain in TR7
| Field | What it determines |
|---|---|
| Domain Name | The zone name; the trailing dot is added automatically, and names with a wildcard character are not accepted. It cannot be changed after the domain is created |
| Default Mode | Standalone (default), Disaster Recovery or Datacenter; the data center groups open according to the mode |
| The EXPRESS box in the data center groups | If unmarked, the group's records are entered on TR7 (Local); if marked, they are pulled from the external DNS server with the selected Express profile |
| Slave Server IPs | The secondary servers that are given zone transfer permission |
| DNSSEC | Signed answers; the DS Records are viewed from the lock icon in the list |
| SOA Format | The format of the SOA serial number: YYYYMMDD01 Format (default), Increase by 1, Current UNIXTIME |
Common Misconceptions
- "A domain is shared by all DNS services." A domain belongs only to the service it is added to; Health Checks and profiles, on the other hand, are device-wide.
- "When a domain is deleted, its records stay in place." When a domain is deleted, all of its records, including the SOA, are deleted.
- "If the mode is changed later, the records stay the same." A mode change is applied to all records when the domain is saved, and the data center groups are re-established according to the new mode; the mode must be decided before records are added.
- "The zone concept is specific to GTM." A zone is a general DNS concept (What is a DNS zone; how does it relate to a domain and a DNS record?); the domain in GTM adds mode and data center settings to it.
