What is an MX record?
Short answer
An MX (Mail Exchanger) record announces which mail servers will accept the e-mail coming to a domain (RFC 5321). Each MX record carries a priority value and a server name; the sending server first tries the server with the smallest priority value, and if it cannot reach it, it moves on to the next one. In TR7 GTM, MX is selected from the Record Type list and entered in the Record cell with two sub-fields: Priority (an integer of 0 and above) and Domain Name (record type specific fields). Domain name is not an IP address but a name that ends with a dot and has its own A/AAAA record; if the dot is missing, the "Must end with dot(.)" warning is given.
Where It Is Used in TR7
| Where | Field / label | What for |
|---|---|---|
| GTM → GTM Services → service name → Records → Add | Record Type = MX | Publishing the mail servers of the domain |
| Same form, the pencil icon in the Record cell | Priority, Domain Name (record type specific fields) | The priority and the name of the server |
| Load Balancer → Profiles → Health Checks (DNS) | DNS Record Type = MX | Checking the DNS server with an MX query |
- Example:
10 mx1.example.com.and20 mx2.example.com.;mx1is tried first, and if it cannot be reached,mx2. - All MX rows of the same domain are entered as separate rows in a single MX record (a second record with the same name and type is blocked with the Record is used warning). While Balance Algorithm is All records (including when the field is left empty), all of the healthy rows are returned in the answer.
Common Misconceptions
- "An IP address is written in the MX record." The MX record points to a name; the IP address of that name is given with a separate A or AAAA record.
- "The larger priority value is tried first." A smaller value is a higher priority; among servers with equal values, the sending side selects randomly.
- "TR7's own e-mails are sent according to the MX record." TR7 sends notification and report e-mails through the SMTP server defined on the E-mail Settings screen (What is SMTP; with which settings does TR7 send e-mail notifications?).
