What do the Remote Device status values mean?
Short answer
The Status circle in the Remote Devices (Data Centers) list shows the access result of the last query made to the remote data center. OK shows that a response was received from each of the defined WAN and LAN lists; No WAN Access, that none of the WAN addresses responded while LAN responded; No LAN Access, the reverse of this; No Access, that no response could be received from any address; Unknown, that there is no result yet. No Internet is produced only for the local data center; it is seen while the scenario in the Internet Access Health Scenario of this device is passive or not selected. The status is updated immediately at every query; DNS decisions, however, are affected not by the status but by the automatic health checks that work with the Required Success / Required Failure thresholds.
How Does It Work?
The status reflects only access; the internet status and maintenance mode of the remote device are shown separately.
| Status | Color | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| OK | Green | At least one address from each of the defined lists (WAN, LAN or both) responded. |
| No WAN Access | Yellow | There is access over LAN; none of the WAN addresses responded. Seen while WAN and LAN addresses are defined together. |
| No LAN Access | Yellow | There is access over WAN; none of the LAN addresses responded. Seen while WAN and LAN addresses are defined together. |
| No Access | Red | No response was received from either the WAN or the LAN addresses. |
| No Internet | Red | Only the local data center: Internet Access Health Scenario is passive or not selected. |
| Unknown | Interface accent color | The data center has not been queried yet or the result has not arrived. |
Other information monitored in the list together with the status:
- Internet Status: The result of the remote device's own Internet Access Health Scenario; Has Internet or No Internet.
- WAN Access / LAN Access: The access result of the list; Has Access or No Access, and
-if the list is not defined. - Maintenance Mode: While the remote device is in Maintenance Mode, (Maintenance mode) is added to the end of the name and the row is colored.
- Last Check: The time elapsed since the last query; it is refreshed at every attempt even if the query fails.
The Effect of the Status in TR7
- The status circle is informational; it does not change the DNS answer directly. The answer is affected by the automatic health checks that receive the same query result (WAN access to
<name>is successful, LAN access to<name>is successful, Access to<name>is successful,<name>has internet access,<name>is under maintenance), through a health scenario. - Unlike the status, these health checks wait for as many consecutive results as Required Success and Required Failure; a one-time access interruption changes the status circle but may not change the scenario.
- Changes in WAN Access, LAN Access and the internet status are monitored in the Log tab of the data center preview and on the GTM Logs screen.
- In a cluster, each device queries the remote data center itself; the results of the two devices may differ.
Common Misconceptions
- "OK means that everything in the remote data center is working." OK shows only access; the internet of the remote device is monitored in the Internet Status column, and the status of its vServices in the DC vServices row in the preview (preview).
- "A data center with only a LAN address defined shows No WAN Access." An undefined list does not affect the status; No WAN Access is seen only when a WAN address is also defined and does not respond. Nevertheless, the WAN access to
<name>is successful health check never becomes OK for this data center; in scenarios, the health check of the defined access type is used. - "When there is No Access, DNS answers pointing to that data center are cut off on their own." The answer changes only if a scenario that uses the automatic health check of this data center is bound to records (What is a Remote Device; how does GTM monitor a remote data center?).
- "Maintenance Mode is a status value." Maintenance Mode does not change Status; it appears next to the name and in the
<name>is under maintenance health check.
